Concrete Waste and Overage Guide
Concrete overage is the extra amount ordered above the exact calculated volume. It protects against measurement error, uneven forms, spillage, consolidation, and jobsite conditions that are hard to measure perfectly. The goal is not to order as much as possible. The goal is to reduce the risk of running short without creating unnecessary disposal problems.
Why exact volume is rarely enough
A calculator uses clean geometry. Jobsites are less clean. Excavated soil can crumble, forms can move, the base may have low spots, and thickness can vary across a slab. Even if the math is correct, the actual space filled by concrete may be larger than the planned shape. Small errors are especially important near the end of a pour because running short can leave an unfinished edge or a cold joint.
Common planning allowance
Many residential estimates use 5 to 10 percent as a planning allowance. A simple formed slab on a compacted base may be near the lower end. Rough excavation, footings, post holes, thickened edges, multiple sections, or irregular curves may need more. The calculator's 10 percent overage is a conservative planning default, not a rule for every project.
Example overage calculation
If the exact calculated volume is 4.2 cubic yards, a 10 percent allowance adds 0.42 cubic yards. The planning quantity becomes 4.62 cubic yards. If the supplier sells in quarter-yard increments, you may need to ask whether the order should be rounded to 4.75 or 5 yards. Rounding practices vary by supplier, so confirm before scheduling delivery.
When more overage may be needed
- Hand-dug footings or holes with uneven sides.
- Slabs with thickened edges, turndowns, or grade beams.
- Curved patios, flared driveways, and irregular forms.
- Rough or uncompacted base material with low spots.
- Long placement routes where spillage is more likely.
- Projects where a second delivery would be expensive or impractical.
When too much overage causes problems
Extra concrete has to go somewhere. A truck may not be able to dump returned concrete on site. Bagged concrete that has been mixed cannot be saved for later. Too much overage can create cleanup, disposal, and environmental concerns. Ask the contractor or supplier how leftover concrete will be handled before ordering more than the project reasonably needs.
How to reduce uncertainty
Measure after forms are set, not only from the drawing. Check thickness in several places. Confirm whether the base has been compacted and leveled. Separate each section of an irregular project and add the totals. For footings or post holes, measure actual depth and width after excavation. These steps make the overage allowance a backup, not a substitute for careful measurement.
Ready-mix and bagged concrete differences
Overage decisions feel different for ready-mix and bagged concrete. With ready-mix, the supplier may round the order and charge for the delivered amount, so the question is often how to avoid a second truck while not creating too much leftover material. With bags, the question is usually how many unopened bags to buy and whether extras can be returned. Check the store return policy before counting returnable bags as part of the plan.
For either method, keep the waste allowance visible in your notes. Separating exact volume from extra volume helps you explain the order to a supplier or crew.
If a crew or supplier recommends a different allowance, ask what condition drives the change. The reason may be uneven excavation, difficult access, a thickened edge, or a delivery rounding rule rather than a different formula.
Do not treat a waste allowance as a final ordering rule. Use it to prepare a quote request, then confirm rounding, delivery increments, and leftover handling with the concrete supplier.
