Patio Concrete Calculator Guide
A patio slab is one of the most common concrete estimating jobs because the shape is often simple, but small assumptions still matter. Thickness, base preparation, slope, finish, access, and waste allowance can change both the amount of concrete and the total project budget. Use this guide with the calculator to estimate material volume before requesting quotes or buying bags.
Patio slab formula
For a rectangular patio, multiply length by width by thickness. Use feet for length and width. Convert thickness from inches to feet by dividing by 12. Divide the cubic feet result by 27 to get cubic yards.
Example: a 14 foot by 18 foot patio at 4 inches thick is 14 x 18 x 0.333, or about 84 cubic feet. Dividing by 27 gives about 3.11 cubic yards before overage. With 10 percent added, the planning quantity is about 3.42 cubic yards.
If the patio includes a walkway, landing, grill pad, or step extension, calculate those areas separately and add them to the main slab volume. This is usually more reliable than rounding the whole shape into one large rectangle.
Choosing a thickness
Patio thickness depends on use, subgrade, reinforcement, and local practice. Many residential patios are planned around a 4 inch slab, but that is not a universal rule. Hot tub pads, vehicle access, poor soil, and structural requirements can call for different thickness or reinforcement. The calculator estimates volume after you enter thickness; it does not determine what thickness is appropriate for your site.
Base preparation and slope
The finished concrete is only one layer of a patio. Excavation, compacted base stone, drainage, and forms affect the final result. A patio should usually be planned with slope away from structures so water does not collect against the building. If the base is uneven, the concrete thickness may vary across the slab, which means the calculated volume can be low if you only use the nominal thickness.
Ready-mix or bags?
Very small patios may be possible with bagged concrete, but a patio can require many bags quickly. For example, one cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. If an 80 lb bag yields about 0.6 cubic feet, one cubic yard is roughly 45 bags before waste. A patio of several cubic yards may be more practical with ready-mix delivery, even if the quote includes a short-load fee.
Bagged concrete can still make sense for remote areas, small landings, or work that must be placed in short sessions. Compare the full cost, including mixer rental, labor, transport, and the risk of cold joints if hand mixing takes too long.
Waste allowance and ordering
A 5 to 10 percent overage is common for planning. Patios with irregular edges, rough excavation, thickened borders, or multiple sections may need more. Measure after the forms are installed when possible. If ordering ready-mix, ask how the supplier handles partial-yard increments, minimum loads, waiting time, and returned concrete.
Patio layout details that change the estimate
Before using the calculator, note whether the patio is one rectangle or several connected areas. A grill pad, step landing, hot tub area, or widened walkway can add more concrete than expected. Also check whether the slab has a thickened edge around the perimeter. If it does, estimate the regular patio slab first, then add the extra edge volume as a separate rectangular section.
Finishing choices also affect planning even when volume stays the same. Stamped, colored, exposed aggregate, or saw-cut designs may require more labor time, release agents, sealers, or scheduling coordination. Keep those costs separate from the material estimate.
Items not included in a material estimate
- Excavation, haul-off, and base stone.
- Forms, stakes, reinforcement, chairs, and tie wire.
- Control joints, curing compound, sealers, and finish upgrades.
- Delivery, short-load fees, pump rental, and labor.
- Permits, drainage work, or repairs to adjacent landscaping.
For final ordering, confirm the formed dimensions, slab thickness, base condition, finish requirements, and delivery access with the supplier or contractor. Use calculator results as a planning estimate, not a guarantee.
